Schools combine for Ten Tors event

Better together – Ridgeway School and Devonport High School for Girls combine for the Ten Tors event in 2016.

 

Once again the combined Ten Tors training group from Ridgeway School and Devonport High School for Girls have entered a strong set of teams at every distance for this year’s event. 

 

It is now thirteen years since former Ridgeway School Headteacher John Didymus introduced the Ten Tors event to enthusiastic students and subsequently merged with DHSG staff to form one of the biggest training groups in Plymouth.

 

Over those years many hundreds of students from both schools have taken part in one of the most challenging wild country expeditions available to teenage children. In an age where fitness and participation in challenging activity are seen as important for good health and employability the combined training group continue to offer great opportunities for outdoor adventure and controlled risk.

 

Volunteer Team manager for the combined training group Bob Costin said,“We are so lucky to have such a strong commitment from training group leaders and children at both Ridgeway and DHSG. The experienced staff offer a fantastic opportunity for students from both schools to participate in the Ten Tors activity and such is the quality of training it is unusual for any team to arrive at the finish without all six team members.  I know all the students have thoroughly enjoyed the training this year despite the often poor weather. We are looking forward to another successful event on the 6th and 7th May and are working towards attracting even more students from both schools for the event in 2017”.

 

Catlin Hannon a 55 mile team member from Ridgeway School said, “As a post 16 student and now a veteran of three Ten Tors teams I am really looking forward to this year’s event. The 55 mile route is a real test of fitness and teamwork and our combined group have worked very hard to ensure we are ready for any eventuality”.
