999 Academy seeks applicants for 2013/14
Following on from a successful pilot programme the 999 Academy is seeking applicants for the 2013/14 academic year.
The 999 Academy is the first of its kind nationally where all four emergency services have come together, with an education provider, to create a joint service academy which aims to inspire young people to become valued and respected members of the community.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the South West Ambulance Service, Devon and Cornwall Police and Petroc have joined forces to offer 16-18 year olds across North Devon a scheme which incorporates learning elements from all four services. The scheme is open to all young people aged 16 -18 years, regardless of their career ambitions or capabilities. Students will develop skills and confidence that will be of benefit to communities and employers.
The mission statement of the 999 Academy is:

The Academy is set to start at the beginning of the Autumn Term and applications need to be submitted by Friday 28 June. The application form is available on the 999 Academy website www.petroc.ac.uk/999academy. Once all application forms have been received, those that are successful at that stage will progress onto a selection weekend which is being held on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July where there will be physical, dexterity, team building and observational tasks to complete as well as an interview.
There are 15 places available and successful candidates can expect during the one year programme to cover areas such as water, mud and rope rescue; breathing apparatus, road traffic collision, water & hose; missing persons, anti-social behaviour; first aid, conflict resolution, command and control, communication; team building, interview techniques.
The scheme will run at Petroc one evening per week from 1800 hours until 2030 hours and will conclude with a scenario day and pass out parade and celebration.
All students will be provided with a uniform. The programme is great fun but will also be physically and emotionally challenging at times.
