Mug artwork sparks nationwide hunt

An exciting find in a cupboard at Sparkwell School has prompted a nationwide search to find the pupils of yesteryear and help celebrate the launch of the new school.

Sparkwell All Saints Primary, which is being created under the free school legislation, is to be officially opened on 29 August after initial refurbishments to the old building have been made.

As the builders moved in to make a start last week, parent Debbie Baird, who was doing a final check through the building was thrilled to discover a mug covered in the self-portraits of 30 past pupils.

Debbie explained: “When I came across the mug I thought it would be a great idea to track down at least some of the people represented and invite them to the opening. We don’t know what year the mug was made but we’re hoping that the faces will create a spark of recognition!

“We’ve already put out a request for former pupils, teachers and support workers to rummage through their keepsakes and assist in the creation of a display of old school memories for the opening day, so this was a really exciting find,” added Debbie.

The school is looking for a range of memorabilia to put on show, from old school ties to exercise books, rulers, awards, certificates and school mascots.

“Most people keep one or two of their school photographs and we’d love to see them – we don’t mind how bad the haircuts are, in fact, the more embarrassing the better!”

The display will blend the past with the future as All Saints looks forward to its next incarnation as a primary school providing an alternative to conventional schooling through individual learning programmes, a greater use of digital technologies and an innovative partnership with businesses.

Everyone who features on the Sparkwell mug is most welcome to attend the opening day, along with anyone who has a connection with the school, past and present. The community celebration will include the chance to meet new Head Teacher Colin Doctor, Early Years Teacher Stephen Crawford and special guest, Masterchef Professional winner Anton Piotrowski from Sparkwell’s Treby Arms.
