A Plymouth family had a lucky escape when their car windscreen was cracked after being hit by a stone thrown by a youth.

The incident took place at around 3.40pm on Monday 3 August on the A38 near Eggbuckland in the city.

The 32-year-old mother and her two children were travelling in their Toyota Yaris past the Donnington Drive footbridge when stones landed on the windscreen and cracked it.

A group of around three youths were seen on the footbridge and a number of stones were thrown onto the car. Luckily the windscreen did not shatter and the driver and her children were uninjured.

Police Community Support Officer Lucy Dight, based in Plymouth, said: “The severity of these actions cannot be over-emphasised. “If the stones had smashed the windscreen the driver could have been seriously injured or lost control and crashed her vehicle - this could have been potentially fatal.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this offence or saw the group of youths on the footbridge at the time.

“We would also urge all parents to talk to their children about the dangers of such behaviour. What seems like fun can have potentially devastating consequences.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police on 101 or email at 101@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk quoting crime reference CR/054124/15.
