It’s a matter of weeks before the clocks go forward, and that means lighter evenings for us to get away from the stresses of work with a nice walk.

Walks have long been popular for those needing a break from the stresses of life, a brain reset if you like, whether a person is struggling with work, relationship problems, or like an ever-growing number of people, suffering from alcohol problems.

And as any rehabilitation centre will tell you, there are few things better to stimulate your brain in all the right ways than a walk out in the countryside.

As we know, there are few places in the country better for a Spring walk than Devon. It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year in the country. But if you’re new to here, or perhaps visiting for the first time to escape everyday stress, where should you be heading out for your walks?

The Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail is a 180-mile walking and cycling route that takes you through the heart of North Devon's countryside. The trail is named after Tarka the Otter, the fictional character created by Henry Williamson, and it takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the region. The trail is well-signposted and there are plenty of places to stop for a picnic or a cup of tea along the way. Just a heads up though, you won’t be able to complete it all in one evening…

The South West Coast Path

This 630-mile walking trail stretches from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset. The trail passes through some of the most stunning coastal scenery in the country, with rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and hidden coves to discover. In Devon, the trail takes you through the South Hams and the Dartmoor National Park, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and the moors. It’s a great path to pick up for a short country walk and to dust off the cobwebs whether it be first thing in the morning or early evening.

The Exe Estuary Trail

Great for cycling, the Exe Estuary Trail is a 26-mile route that takes you along the River Exe from Exmouth to Dawlish. The trail is flat and easy-going, making it the perfect choice for a relaxing Spring walk or cycle. Along the way, you'll pass through picturesque towns and villages, including Topsham and Starcross, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop for a bite to eat or a drink.

The Dart Valley Trail

The Dart Valley Trail takes in 16-miles along the River Dart from Totnes to Dartmouth. The trail passes through some of the most gorgeous  countryside in South Devon, with rolling hills, wooded valleys, and stunning views of the river. Along the way, you'll pass through the historic town of Totnes and the quaint village of Dittisham, where you can stop for a cream tea or a pint of local ale to round off the evening

Haldon Forest Park

With 3,500-acres of woodland on the edge of Exeter, Haldon Forest Park offers a variety of walking trails, ranging from short strolls to longer hikes, and there are plenty of picnic areas and cafes to stop at along the way. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, badgers, and a wide range of bird species, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind in nature.
