A much-beloved staple of British TV, for many, game shows are the first things that go on the box after a long day at work and even merit nighttime viewing. The UK boasts many great and inventive game shows, some of which have gone on to find tremendous success around the world, as Deal or No Deal once did, but one of the current hits is based on an old US game show.

Lingo, which picked up again in January in a weekday 3 pm slot, had run over here in 1988 for one season. This revived version with Adil Ray presenting is now in its third run, and earlier this year, a couple from Devon stole the spotlight. The husband and wife duo got to the semi-final, but reports relay that audiences discussing the show online loved their performance.

Luckily, the British love of game shows means that there’s a whole host of TV spots that anyone can apply to be on if they know how, as well as play some at home. Here’s how to play and the shows that rank among the UK’s favourites in case you can’t decide which shows to apply to be on next time.

Being a part of a game show

There are so many different game shows to apply for across British TV right now. The process tends to be that you’ll fill out a form with all of your details and submit it. Next, if it’s along the lines of a quiz show, and if accepted, you’ll likely get a phone call before being accepted or invited down to the studio for the in-person part. For most channels, this process can begin on the official websites.

Right now, it’s tough to argue against ITV being the main channel for game shows – especially big-money game shows – in the UK. To apply to be a part of any show on the channel, you need to go via their Be On TV page. At the time of writing, you could apply to be on Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win, Tipping Point, Dickinson’s Real Deal, In With a shout, Beat the Chasers, Tenable, and so many more.

For the BBC, you turn to their section for shows, tours, and taking part to apply for a spot on a TV show. Within the entertainment section, Picture Slam, Blankety Blank, The Hit List, Survivor, Mastermind, and Gladiators were all open to applicants. Then again, if you want to get the contestant experience and play game shows without being on TV, there is another way to go.

Instead of the potentially nerve-racking experience, you can stay on the sofa to play the game shows available on the live casino online. All streamed directly to your device with real game machines and human hosts live, you get to bet and play along to a range of new hits, including Crazy Time, Dream Catcher, Mega Ball, Deal or No Deal, and Cash or Crash. Each offers a unique game to play that’s powered by luck, randomisation, and charismatic hosts.

Of course, if you do end up targeting the in-studio experience, you’re going to want to go for the best game shows on British TV. For a long time, Countdown has managed to win over the glut of game show fans, but Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and The Chase also tug on those quiz cravings that people love. Alternatively, Pointless is always great for those with obscure factoids locked away, and £100K Drop is great for bettors – even if it’s one-tenth as appealing as it once was.

If you want to be the next great game show contestant from Devon, get onto the application pages online today and see if you make the cut for a British favourite.
