Improvements continue for popular cycling and walking route
Cycling and pedestrian facilities between the Barbican and Laira Rail Bridge are set for more improvements.
Following on from works carried out on Finnigan Road and Clovelly Road earlier this year, new proposals include improvements along Cattedown Road, and a brand new, off-road section through Neptune Park.
Already part of the South West Coast Path and the National Cycle Network, this part of the Barbican to Laira Rail Bridge route will be upgraded with improved road crossings, widened and resurfaced footways and off-road cycle paths, better signage and new lighting.
A consultation is now underway so that neighbouring businesses and users of this stretch can give their feedback to make sure that the changes are suitable for all involved.
Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, said: “This particular stretch of road sees a number of HGVs access local businesses, so it would be very helpful to provide an off-road route where families, and less confident cyclists can avoid cycling with traffic.”
Proposed changes on Cattedown Road will see resurfacing and widening of the footway with the addition of dropped kerbs at crossings to provide an off-road cycle path.
Damaged kerbs will be replaced and additional double yellow lining is proposed to keep the road, footway and cycleway clear of parked vehicles. Marked parking areas along the road will be added.
Meanwhile, a completely new walking and cycling link from Cattedown Road to Finnigan Road via Neptune Park is also in the plans.
Councillor Jeremy Goslin, Plymouth’s Walking and Cycling Champion, added: “I welcome these proposals and am particularly pleased to see improvements such as dropped kerbs that will aid people with disabilities.”
A consultation period on the changes is now open and will run until 28 September.
