A 25-year-old Polish man has died after falling approximately 100 feet from a cliff while walking close to Whitsand Bay near Plymouth in the early hours of Sunday morning (14 July).

The man was airlifted to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital with serious head injuries after a friend raised the alarm. South Western Ambulance Service contacted Brixham Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to report that they were dealing with the young man who fallen from cliffs near Whitsand Bay Holiday Park. Because of his position on the cliffs the Coastguard Rescue Teams from Looe and Tamar were sent to the scene with the Royal Navy Rescue Helicopter based at Chivenor.

The man later died from his injuries.

Brixham coastguard Watch Manager Dave Scullion said:

"Cliff edges can be dangerous during daylight hours as they can be slippery and prone to erosion. They become even more dangerous during the hours of darkness. It's often difficult to see the edge and you can easily just take a step into the void.

"Please stay away from these paths and if you, or a friend, does get into difficulty call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
