Rhizome to exhibit as part of Devon Open Studios 2021
Rhizome Artists' Collective, a Plymouth-based group of creatives, will be staging an exhibition of its members' work for Devon Open Studios, an annual event involving 323 artists at 183 venues during 11-26 September 2021 (open 10-5 Thu-Sat).
"Our exhibition will give people an opportunity to get to know Rhizome - meet the members, see what we do, where we do it and see the work we make; both individually and collaboratively." says Peter Heywood, Rhizome member. "There will be opportunities to see and buy a diverse range of works from paintings to sculpture, from lampshades to automata.”
Rhizome is at the westerly end of the South Hams and the City Arts Trail, a subset of Devon Open Studios that links together 46 artists at 7 venues. The exhibition will be in Rhizome's residence at Unit 11 and the first floor corridors of the HQ Business Centre, the former Jaeger factory next to Lidl on Union Street. Here is a taster of what will be exhibited:
- Former art teacher Richard Sunderland will display works of a journey of re-learning and re-discovering his surroundings after a stroke in 2016.
- Award winning glass art from Mim Brigham inspired by the biodiverse environments and varied constructions and designs of Cornish Hedges.
- Collaborative painting performance by the group at Tinside Lido during Plymouth Art Weekender 2020, which are now large wall hangings.
- Drawings and paintings by 'story-thinker' Ellen Sims, who says "I cannot look at people, objects or places without imagining a narrative, verbal or visual".
- An installation, ceramics and other work by environmental artist Judy Harington whose primary focus is plastic pollution.
- 3D objects by Inventor Designer Peter Heywood, who likes to engage, amuse and intrigue his audience by using unusual materials and creating interactive sculpture
- Vibrant mixed media paintings by Jane Athron inspired by her dreams and her life in Mexico
