Running strong in Dad's memory
Thousands are expected to take part in the South West Coast Ultra Challenge on 2nd August, covering parts of the stunning Somerset coastline. Among them is Toby, a 20-year-old Youth Ambassador for children’s bereavement charity Winston’s Wish, who is taking on the Dunster Castle 10K loop in memory of their dad, Mark.
Toby lost their father to suicide in 2019 and is using the challenge to raise funds and awareness for Winston’s Wish, which supports grieving children and young people across the UK.
“In August, I'm doing the Dunster Castle 10K in honour of my lovely dad,” says Toby. “He had a huge personality and was such an amazing dad. I miss him every day.”
Now a student and athlete, Toby is combining regular gym sessions and endurance training with fundraising efforts. The chosen route holds special meaning: “Dunster Castle is close to home. I used to visit the grounds with my dad as a child—it’s the perfect place to remember him and raise money.”
Toby joined the Winston’s Wish Youth Ambassador Team after seeing the charity’s impact on friends. “I’ve struggled to process my grief, and I wish I’d found Winston’s Wish sooner,” they explain. “Their support is incredible—they help tens of thousands of people.”
As a Youth Ambassador, Toby has contributed to the Grief in Common podcast, sharing personal experiences to help others navigating grief. “Talking about how I coped with things like step-parents or physical effects of grief can really help others feel less alone.”
