Take sanctuary with the donkeys this half term
This February half term is the ideal time to wrap up warm, get out in the fresh air and meet some of the four-legged residents of The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth.
Set in the East Devon countryside, the sanctuary is free to visit and park, and dog friendly too. For the younger visitors there’s a natural play area and a maze, as well as scenic walks, engaging exhibits and talks and a fascinating bat beacon exhibition.
To discover even more, The Big Sanctuary Search Trail gives people the chance to combine exercise and brainpower, and explore the sanctuary to help complete their trail sheet.
Starting from the visitor centre, the trail offers opportunities to meet some of the resident donkeys too, including the miniature donkeys in their newly revamped enrichment paddock, home to Adoption Donkeys Maverick and Peanut, as well as the herd of donkeys in Shelter One, where more of the sanctuary’s Adoption Donkeys can be found.
The Big Sanctuary Search Trail runs right through February and March. Trail sheets cost £5 each which also includes a prize on completion.
The award-winning restaurant, The Kitchen, offers the perfect place to warm up and enjoy fresh, local, seasonal produce while soaking in unparalleled coast and country views. To celebrate Pancake Day on Tuesday 4th March, the restaurant will be serving up a selection of pancakes and crepes - including vegan pancakes, crepes, fluffy American-style pancakes and a variety of toppings.
The Donkey Sanctuary also has a Gift Shop, which is packed with unique donkey-design items and souvenirs. Every purchase goes towards helping donkeys in need.
The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth is open seven days a week, from 9am to 4pm.
