There’s an a'maze'ing challenge in store for young readers at Plymouth’s libraries this summer.

Children aged between four and 12 are being invited to step into the ‘Mythical Maze’ and read at least six books or e-books over the school holiday, collecting scratch-and-sniff stickers, games and wristbands along the way.

There’s a poster to help track their reading and every child who reads six books will be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle Fire tablet. The Amazing Maize Maze in Saltash is also offering two family tickets to its special after-dark tours in September for the runners-up.
Every child who reads six books will be presented with a medal at their library and a certificate during their school assembly.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is always really popular with youngsters and it’s a great way to get less confident readers enjoying books. Mythical Maze will have something on offer for children of all ages and reading levels and there are lots of goodies and prizes up for grabs.”

The Summer Reading Challenge is organised nationally by The Reading Agency and all holiday activities run by the Council’s library service are validated by the Children’s University.

Children can take part for free by visiting any Plymouth library from Saturday 12 July. Visually impaired children can also take part – just request a special large print pack supported by the RNIB.

An early years card is also available for younger siblings aged three and under who want to join in, with stickers to collect. Babies and toddlers who collect six stickers will receive a certificate.

Other free fun activities include author events, stories, crafts, storytelling, treasure hunts and dance workshops inspired by the Gog and Magog story.
