Staff mark World Radiography Day
Staff from the Radiography Department at Derriford Hospital marked World Radiography Day yesterday with a stand in the main concourse.
Derriford Hospital celebrates World Radiography Day every year to mark the anniversary of the discovery of x-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.
World Radiography Day raises awareness of radiographic imaging and therapy, which play a crucial role in the diagnosis and the treatment of patients and ensures radiation is kept to the minimum required.
Amanda Burden, Superintendent Radiographer said: “We are aiming to promote radiography as a rewarding and worthwhile career choice and raise awareness to the general public about what we do as a profession.
“This year’s theme for World Radiography Day is ‘radiography and the First World War’, which marks the centenary of the beginning of the Great War. This period was crucial in the development of both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography.”
The radiology department at Derriford Hospital has a national and international reputation for teaching and innovation and is the largest radiology department in the South West of England. The department has more than 200 staff, including radiographers and specialist nurses and over 30 consultants, all with specialist interests.
