Plymouth Marine takes on marathon for RNRMC
Royal Marines Unit Physical Trainer Instructor (UPTI) Sergeant Robert Garthland, from the 30 Commando IX Group in Plymouth, will be running the London Marathon on April 26th to raise funds for The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
Robert, originally from Glasgow, has been in the Royal Marines for almost 14 years and will be running with Royal Navy Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Anthony ‘Scouse’ Carley (36), from HMS Collingwood in Plymouth. Both have decided to take up the challenge and even raise the stakes by carrying 26.3lbs in their Bergens.
He said: “I have competed in the US Marine Corps Marathon in Washington so this will be my second one. We will be running in uniform and combat boots, however this time I will be carrying 26.2lbs as opposed to 21lbs – no point in not making it harder!”
He added: “I have always wanted to take part in the London Marathon and thanks to RNRMC I've been given this opportunity. This is a great way of both challenging myself and giving something back to the community as I intend to raise in excess of £1000 for RNRMC, who directly helps to improve the lives of both Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel."
