Top Events on Digital Radio this Autumn and Winter
The UK’s digital radio stations will cover a variety of live music and sporting events this winter. With more people than ever listening to online streaming services and DAB radio, broadcasters are beginning to prioritise their digital services over their FM equivalent and offer a myriad of exclusive digital content.
This list encompasses some of the biggest events of the coming months available on digital radio.
Rugby World Cup: October
The month of October sees the Rugby World Cup held on home ground in England and Wales, culminating in the final on the 31st October. The BBC has secured the live radio commentary rights to bring you all the action. Full commentary will be provided by Radio Five Live, Radio Five Live Sports Extra and a range of BBC radio stations around the country as rugby union's top international teams compete for the Webb Ellis Cup.
Formula 1: October to November
If you prefer your action off the field and on the track then BBC Radio Five Live and Sports Extra have you covered as the F1 drivers continue to pursue the chequered flag. There are just five races remaining, culminating in the final race of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina. Can Lewis Hamilton retain his lead to claim his third World Championship win?
The Magic of Christmas: 29th November
Magic Digital Radio is hosting an event from the London Palladium on the 29th November. Tickets are available for the live event now and the evening will also be broadcast. The concert is hosted by Ronan Keating and Nick Snaith and there will be performances from James Morrison and Beverly Knight amongst others. You can check out full details of the evening on the Magic website.
Classic FM Live – April 2016
If you are a classical music lover then there is something to look forward to as we go into spring next year, but book early to avoid disappointment as this always proves a popular event. On 5th April 2016 Classic FM Live is returning to the Royal Albert Hall where Garry Walker will conduct the Royal Scottish
National Orchestra as they celebrate their 125th anniversary year.
The evening will showcase some of the nation’s favourite music concluding with a spectacular lights-and-fireworks display all set to the sound of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. The evening will be hosted by John Suchet and Margherita Taylor and tickets can be booked now on the Classic FM website.
Your Local DAB Radio
The great thing about DAB radio is that as well as the national stations you can also always find something going on closer to home. The BBC has a local network for each region but there are also independent stations which offer a range of programming. This can help you find out what is going on in your local community as it offers consumer affairs, Christmas and New Year events and even local fundraising activities. If you are tired of hearing only what is going on in the major cities around the UK, which are too far for you to travel to, then DAB radio is a far more inclusive option.
The Expansion of DAB Radio
There are some fantastic events to look forward to on DAB radio over the coming months, but none are as exciting as the rapid expansion planned to begin as we enter autumn and winter 2015. Following a government consultation, it has been decided to open up the airwaves to new stations wishing to broadcast in mono. It is expected that over 175 new stations will begin broadcasting by spring 2016.
For more information on scheduling and upcoming events, most digital radio stations feature a schedule that can be found either online on their website or on digital television guides.
