Plymouth and Tavistock accountancy firm Condy Mathias is celebrating after it was declared a finalist at the South West Business Leader Awards.

Shortlisted for Employer of the Year, the team at Condy Mathias impressed judges with their strategic approach to employee retention and recruitment.

The firm has invested significantly in its team, conducting surveys and bringing in outside expertise to better understand employees’ needs and ambitions.

This has helped to highlight the elements of work within the firm that drive engagement, but equally cause frustration, which it is now looking to address with new development plans for its staff.

Part of this research saw the use of a ‘Cultural Diagnostic’ exercise, which involved a consultant interviewing members of the team to assess key areas of improvement.

This study found that Condy Mathias’s culture was “Strong and Family-Orientated”. The consultants were impressed with the firm’s social workplace, built around regular events, which include a ‘post-tax return celebration’, a popular summer social and a dedicated social committee.

It was for this, and many other reasons, that the firm has been shortlisted at the South West Business Leader Awards.

John Hillier, Director at Condy Mathias, said: “We have put a lot of work into better understanding our current work environment and how we can take steps to make it even better.

“We are proud of our recognition at these awards and have been even more delighted with the development of our team as a result of our actions.

“With big plans for the future of our practice, a win at these awards would be the icing on the cake.”

The firm will find out whether it has won the award and beaten its local competition at a ceremony due to be held at Ashton Gate in Bristol on 21 September.
