The Beer Heights Light Railway (BHLR) proudly unveiled a refreshed look for one of its most beloved locomotives, Dickie, Saturday 19th July—marking a fitting finale to the railway’s 50th birthday celebration week.
Over the winter months, BHLR launched a public competition inviting fans and visitors to redesign Dickie’s livery. Earlier this year, the railway’s staff selected a winning design submitted by Dylan, whose entry paid homage to the locomotive’s original colours from nearly five decades ago.
Today, Dylan was invited to the railway with his family and friends to officially unveil the newly painted Dickie. A warm and enthusiastic crowd gathered to witness the special moment.
Callum Darraugh, BHLR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer, addressed the audience, reflecting on the railway’s rich history and its continued evolution. Speaking about the competition, he said:

“We had a lot of creative ideas, but when we saw Dylan’s design, we knew we had a winner.”

A heartfelt thank you was extended to the entire team who worked tirelessly to prepare Dickie in time for the end of the 50th birthday week. Dylan was joined by Carolyn Nation, engineer and primary painter of the locomotive, to unveil the new livery. Carolyn was supported in the painting process by Callum, while the rest of the BHLR team carried out essential repairs to ensure Dickie continues to run smoothly for years to come.
The event was a joyful celebration, made even more special by the presence of many supportive visitors. It was a proud and memorable way to close a milestone chapter in the railway’s history.

We look forward to opening our gates to visitors for 7 days a week during the Summer Holidays, with 50% off throughout the season. Everyone can come along and see the wonderful Miniature steam engines here on site.
