Young Writers Squad launched for budding JK Rowlings

Could you be the next JK Rowling or Jacqueline Wilson? If you’re aged between 12 and 15 and love to write why not join Young Writers Squad Plymouth?

The group, which launches on Saturday 5 October, is for young people interested in creative writing of any kind - from poems to plays, stories to songs and texts to tweets. The work they produce will be displayed in the library and there will be a chance to take part in writing workshops with published novelist Babs Horton.

Babs is an award-winning writer of novels and short stories. She is a former Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at Plymouth University and has taught in many Plymouth secondary schools. Her last job was at the Hospital School, working in the Young People’s Centre. Babs’ first book, ‘A Jarful of Angels,’ won the Pendleton May First Novel award and she was short listed for the Authors Club Award. ‘Dandelion Soup’ was published in 2004, Wildcat Moon in 2006 and Recipes for Cherubs in 2008. She is currently working on a new novel, ‘The Emporium of Dreams.’

The Young Writers Squad Network is a project run by Literature Works, the South West literature development agency and is part of the Read/Write project funded by Big Lottery. The charity raises funds for reading and writing activity has funded several writers’ residences across the South West.

The Plymouth Squad will be meeting fortnightly at Plymstock Library, every other Saturday from 5 October to 16 November and sessions will run from 11am to 1pm.
