Study examines causes of earthquakes originating deep below earth’s surface

The mechanisms which cause earthquake cycles to begin up to 40km below the earth’s surface in the interiors of continents are to be explored in a new research project led by the University of Plymouth.

Such earthquakes account for around 30% of intracontinental seismic activity, but very little is presently known about what causes them and the geological effects they leave behind....

The British Red Cross is today (Thursday 30 April) launching ‘Shop Drop for Nepal’ to give people another way to donate to its Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

The Red Cross is appealing to people to clear out their wardrobes and cupboards and donate their unwanted clothes and goods to their local Red Cross shop.

Red Cross aid workers arrive in Nepal

British Red Cross aid workers are arriving in the region to assess the damage wreaked by the devastating 7.9 scale earthquake, which struck just outside the Nepalese capital on Saturday.

These teams will join British Red Cross and International Federation of the Red Cross teams already in Nepal to help coordinate relief effort on the ground.

Earthquake felt in the West Country

A small earthquake reported in North Devon has been confirmed by the British Geographical Survey.

The small quake is thought to have taken place in the Bristol channel off the at around 1.21pm today.
