Every summer we eagerly await the delivery of the new collection from Barry Kelly. His paintings are always so full of light, sun and warmth. Somehow or other he always takes his work another step forward, another new development that reflects his growing talent as an artist.
This summer is no exception. His colours are bright and true and his skies are so full of promise and wonder. His foregrounds are complex, little miniature works on their own which compel and entrance. Each painting as a whole represents a snapshot of an element of the land of the South Hams. Barry captures...
When it comes to architecture not many of us know our Post Modern from our Beaux Arts, so understanding the different architectural styles that make up a city can be confusing – but thanks to a new animated film, Plymouth residents can learn much more about the heritage right under their feet.
‘Plymouth – City of the Future’ has been produced by animator Robin Holland at Saltash-...
Plymouth’s highly acclaimed new museum, art gallery and archive is delighted to announce a new public art commission by internationally renowned artist Camille Walala. The commission, which is curated by Alter-Projects, is a major highlight of The Box’s summer 2021 programme. It will form part of a series of events and activations designed to bring its newly created public square, Tavistock...
There is a very good reason Teresa Pemberton is one of our most popular artists and you only have to look at this collection of new work to see why. Her colours are simply beautiful. Soft hues of pastel blues and pinks shimmer alongside glistening turquoise and purples. A splash of neon pink, or zinging orange brings the impressionist landscape into focus, allowing the viewer to capture shapes and colours hitherto unseen.
Teresa is masterful in her approach to applying paint to canvas; her strokes are confident and sure as she draws you into her world of cool lily ponds, sparkling...
Family & Friends: Reynolds at Port Eliot is a new, free exhibition that draws on The Box’s extensive collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds paintings – the UK’s single largest public collection of his work outside of London – to explore the enduring connection between the Plymouth-born master painter and the Eliot family of Port Eliot in St Germans, Cornwall.
British Abstract artist Jerry Browning has produced a stunning new collection of work inspired by the estuaries, bays and headlands around the Camel River, Padstow Bay, Rock and the surrounding Cornish coastline.
Taking advantage of the enforced quiet and solitude during lockdown, Browning was able to roam the area undisturbed, finding the perfect vantage points along the coast path and inland walks, where he could spend all day and every day, capturing the magnificent landscape spread out before him.
The new collection has a renewed freshness, a clarity, to the work on the...

In the year that the UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, THG and East Devon District Council launch Climate Conversations: a multi-site programme of exhibitions, events and activities
For the first time, Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) will present an exhibition across two towns - Honiton and Exmouth.
Our first Exhibition of the year brings together three very different artists from the south west, John Grice , Joe Webster and Ellie Verrecchia , who each have a true love of the natural world which they celebrate in their paintings. Their landscapes and seascapes of the local coastline and countryside are exceptional. John has produced some fantastic new work. Joe likes to mix things up with a bit of street art giving an edge to his paintings, and Ellie's gentle works on paper are breathtakingly beautiful.
You can browse the exhibition here and if you would like to see more...
This January, Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) will dedicate their main gallery space to a film by acclaimed Greek-British artist Mikhail Karikis.
