Although Anthony Amos is recognised for his wonderful seascapes and maritime paintings, which were inspired by over twenty years working at sea, he also had a strong affinity to the English countryside defined by his work as a farm labourer when he was not at sea.
His landscape paintings usually feature horses, trees and farm animals, often presenting a gentler view compared to the excitement and danger of life at sea. Still recognisable though is the way he captures the strength of the horses as they pull a plough or bring in a lifeboat, or the humour and endearing nature of cows...
This intimate exhibition includes a selection of previously unseen paintings of Jones's favourite places - Dartmoor, Oxford and London - and some wonderful portraits. In addition there are also sketches, letters and notebooks which give a fascinating insight into the life of this hugely talented artist. Her artistic career took her from Cornwall to Baltimore, and from the circus to the Nuremberg Trials. She painted dancers at the Ballets Russes and gypsies at Empsom races, and was acclaimed for her work as an official war artist.
Knight used portraiture to capture contemporary life and culture, and her paintings are remarkable for their diverse range of subjects and settings.
