Is this what your website would say if it had a voice? How many of you have invested your time and in some cases, a not inconsequential amount of money, in a website only to leave it floundering out there in cyberspace fighting for its intergalactic life! Out of date information, typos, old images, missing information on built pages, outdated screen sizes, links that don’t work, no social media links and half-hearted attempts to be social, news features and blogs several months old, text heavy content, poor visuals, the list goes on and on…..
And yet, there are hundreds, if not thousands of businesses who are not grabbing the opportunity with both hands to get their image and messages right for the internet, let alone the thousands of individuals using iPhones and iPads to access internet details and don’t let’s get started on search engine optimisation! Across a number of industries now, a huge number of customers start their searches online. At mid-year stage in 2012, the percentage of the UK population online was 84.1% with nearly 47 million people going online at least once a month helped by the expanding use of smartphones and tablets. UK internet users made 2.3 billion visits to search engines in January 2012, up from 2.2 billion in January 2011, according to Hitwise. Visits to search engines are up by 4.5% year-on-year with nearly 100 million more visits in January this year than last year. (Source: New Media Trend Watch) The opportunities being missed here are not only substantial but business breaking.
If this keeps you awake at night, good – it means you want to do something about it. If it doesn’t, then you may as well hand your business on a plate to your nearest competitor who’s doing it right. If it seems like too big a situation to get right, then take it one step at a time. Get your site reviewed objectively – the opportunities to bring a strong, appropriate and persuasive website offering to market are considerable and the rewards are substantial. And remember a website isn’t just a one-off entity, it needs ongoing updates with blogs being done regularly, news features updated and the marketing of your business maximised for today’s mobile internet users.
