Persimmon Homes, one of the UK’s leading housebuilders, has helped inspire next generation of construction workers in South Devon.

The local team supported South Devon College’s SkillBuild 2023 event which was held on Thursday, April 27th, and was an opportunity for local primary school students to explore the wide range of careers available in the construction industry.

Persimmon has recently started construction at its nearby Inglewood site in Paignton, and as part of its commitment to the local area is undertaking a number of initiatives with the College.

At SkillBuild, the housebuilder engaged with over 60 students throughout the day, providing them with a better understanding of the housebuilding sector and inspiring them to consider a career in the industry.

Persimmon South West carpentry apprentices, Will Bickerstaff and Ollie Bradley, supported the activity that took place alongside the national CITB SkillBuild competition for apprentices and full-time learners.

Commenting after the event, Persimmon’s regional apprenticeship manager, Andy Wallis said: “We are thrilled to have been a part of SkillBuild 2023, an event that truly inspires the next generation of housebuilders.

“It was great to engage with so many young students from Shiphay Primary, Paington Academy, Dawlish College, Hayes Primary and South Devon UTC and provide them with a glimpse into the construction industry and the many exciting career opportunities which are available at Persimmon and across the sector.

“With the launch of our nearby Inglewood site in Paignton, we are determined to leave a lasting and positive legacy locally, and engaging with local schools and students is an important element of the work we are doing.

“SkillBuild 2023 was a resounding success and Persimmon is proud to have played a part in inspiring the next generation of construction professionals.”

All students who attended the activity were gifted a Persimmon-specific ‘Cones and Building Homes’ book. Persimmon was also pleased to provide materials for the college’s ‘Have a Go’ activity.

The “Have a Go” section of the event allowed local primary school students to experience different elements of the construction industry, making for a fun-filled and rewarding experience for all involved.
