Trading Standards' warning to register fireworks stores

Fireworks sellers are being warned to make sure they are operating and storing stock legally.

In the run up to Bonfire Night, Plymouth City Council’s Trading Standards service is reminding traders that fireworks intended for sale must be kept in a store that is registered with the Council. Checks are made to ensure the fireworks are stored safely and away from any sources of ignition.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Smith said: “Some sellers will store fireworks in self-storage units, lock ups, garages or even spare rooms. This is not illegal providing that the storage location is registered. However, some individuals want to operate under the radar and make a quick buck. They don’t register the store which puts people’s lives at risk.”

In recent years fireworks have been seized from unregistered stores.

Cllr Smith added: “We are also aware that people sell fireworks from the back of vans. This is illegal and dangerous, fireworks are explosives and we don’t want people driving them around the city.”
